When putting aside foods for an emergency, peanut butter is your best and most inexpensive choice. Besides being tasty, peanut butter is a high protein food, and packed with other nutrients if you find yourself in a fix where food is scarce, unavailable, or you don’t have the resources to cook. Regardless if it’s smooth or crunchy, peanut butter has carbohydrates to provide quick energy, and contains wholesome fats the body needs in colder conditions to keep warm. Peanut butter can be stored in jars or special packs created just for emergency preparation kits.

Peanut butter is non-perishable. When stored properly, it doesn’t go bad like other foods do even after it has been opened. Militia and military packs nearly always contain peanut butter and it has even been taken on space missions by astronauts. It is a staple in nearly all emergency preparation kits. The nutty, non-perishable paste is considered the most essential food you can have on hand in an emergency.

While peanut butter is a safe bet in terms of food stores, it also serves a number of other every day purposes that can be helpful in an emergency. Peanut butter used in a mouse trap makes excellent bait. Apply a thin coating to the trap where the bait would normally be placed. Because peanut butter is sticky, it is not as easy for rodents to snatch it away before the trap shuts. Also, the oil in peanut butter makes an excellent gum remover. Apply peanut butter wherever gum is stuck and it will loosen it up fast. Peanut butter also removes resins like those from pine trees. Any way that you look at it, peanut butter is the #1 food you can have on hand for any emergency situation.
