Crackers

Posted in Food and Prep, Gear

One of the most important aspects of preparing for any emergency is ensuring that you keep a healthy stock of items that give the maximum amount of benefit for the least amount of effort. Ritz crackers appear to be an ideal foodstuff on the surface. One serving of Ritz crackers contain 2 percent of your daily intake of iron and calcium. They are also extremely lightweight and easy to carry, making them ideal for travelling if the need arises.

However this is unfortunately where their nutritional benefits end. The crackers can serve as a great snack but they don’t offer much when it comes to vitamin intake. A single serving, which amounts to five crackers, also only adds up to about 80 calories. This is great for those of us who are looking for something to snack on when losing weight but is perhaps not ideal in an emergency when we are looking for something that will give us the most energy for as little outlay as possible.

This also means that getting a truly decent amount of nutrition from Ritz crackers requires eating rather large portions. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t keep Ritz crackers as part of your preparation stock though. They can be a great accompaniment to a meal and will also work wonders in staving off hunger pains to ensure you can adequately ration the rest of your food stock if needed. Just be careful not to rely on them as a primary food source and they can provide some nutritional value and variety to your diet.
